What is the Databook?

The Construction Aggregates Databook is a database consolidating 30 years of U.S. government data pertinent to the aggregate industry.  The information is provided in a 333 page publication and on an accompanying CD-ROM.  The Databook has more than 315 tables; each data table is provided as an Excel 4.0 spreadsheet file.  In most of the tables, the horizontal axis is the individual years from 1970 through 1999; the 50 states plus the District of Columbia are on the vertical axis.  There are more than 80 tables of this type.  A series of 50 tables consolidates the information for each state.  In the state tables, the vertical axis is all the items of Databook information for that state.  That is, for each state, 30 years of key aggregate and related data are summarized on one page (and therefore one spreadsheet file), by year.

New data is added to the Databook's database as it is released by government agencies; revisions are also incorporated as they occur.  The Construction Aggregates Databook is printed three times each year.  Quarterly data from the U.S. Geological Survey is posted on Construction Market Research's web site.

How would I use the Databook?

The Databook is an excellent ready reference for strategic planning, providing data needed to help evaluate past performance, visualize market trends, identify growth opportunities, construct forecasting models, estimate market shares, and plan sales quotas.  The spreadsheet files on the Construction Aggregate Datadisk are in Microsoft Excel 4.0 format and can be loaded directly into:

  • Word processors such as MS-Word and WordPerfect
  • Spreadsheets such as MS-Excel, Lotus-123, and Borland Quatro
  • Databases such as dBase, MS-FoxPro, MS-Access, Oracle, and IBM-DB2

The user can then organize, format, and print selected data or easily construct a business model or customized database for their particular needs.  The integration of company-proprietary data with statistics in this report can provide valuable information for strategic planning.  Each table provides an opportunity for analysis of company performance relative to state norms and national trends.

What construction aggregates data is in the Databook?

The Databook includes government annual reports from 1970 through 1999, by year, of the quantity and value of crushed stone and construction sand & gravel sold or used by producers in each state.  Separate tables report the quantity in both short and metric tons.  Quarterly data from 1990 through 1999 is also included.  Tables of total aggregate, per capita consumption, and average values per ton have been calculated.  In addition to the tables, there are 3-D graphics and several thematic maps of the U.S.  The Databook also has a series of tables that consolidate historical information such as: the number and size of plant operations; transportation; end-uses of aggregate; crushed stone production by type of stone; U.S. totals of the quantity and value of exports and imports, and U.S. leading aggregate producers.
